LARGE SCHIST BODHISATTVA HEAD

A Fine Large Museum quality schist stone Bodhisattva Maitreya head, This is a superb example of a Gandharan 1-3rd century Bodhisattva head carved from blue/green schist stone, from the swat region of Northern Pakistan and very rare to find in this excellent condition. Some remains of soil encrustation. He wears his hair in tight Hellenistic curls which hang around his face, together with elaborate earrings or garlands. Gandhara, Pakistan, 1st-3rd Century AD. For a similar example is in the Swat museum catalogue number 111( inv. No V.722). He has two carved holes which were intended as tenon joints in order to attach the figure to a relief or attach a separately carved nimbus to the back of the head. RARE CLASSICAL STONE BUDDHA HEAD

Gandhara is proud to present this museum quality carved Schist Buddha head, The Buddha head is carved from schist stone. Collected from what was formally North West India. Extremely rare to find in this excellent condition. His right ear is now missing, However we suspect it was never actually carved, the head being part of a larger relief panel and attached down the right side of the Buddha image, there is also a possible repair to his right eye, it is difficult to say if this is a repair or a slight change of colour within the Schist stone. 1st-3rd Century AD, Guaranteed.
For similar examples see The Gandhara Style, Madeleine Hallade, Thames & Hudson 1968. Page 79 pl.56/57. He has one carved hole at the top of his head, which would have originally been intended for the attachment of a decoration. Professionally mounted on black laminate and matching black metal rod stand.

NARRATIVE BUDDHA RELIEF
GANDHARA 1st-3rd Century AD
Code: 0243 - SOLD
A fine narrative relief depicting two seated Buddhas with attendants in colonnaded niches. The right panel the Buddhas sits in a meditative posture, his head (now missing) is surrounded by leaves, reminiscent of his meditation beneath the bodi tree before attaining enlightenment. He is attended by Brahma, Indra and Vajrapani. In the scene to the left, he is seated with his hands in the fearlessness mudra with leaves of the bodi tree around his head and Brahma and Indra at each side. This is a fine example of Gandharan 1st-3rd century art. Would have originally been part of a much larger relief decorating the dome of a circular stupa, just above the square base upon which the dome rests.
For similar examples see The Gandhara Style, Madeleine Hallade, Thames & Hudson 1968, & Indian Sculpture Volume 1, Pratapaditya Pal 1986. The piece has been professionally mounted on a clear plexi glass stand with black metal rods. Guaranteed original Gandhara 1st-3rd Century.

ELEPHANT CARVED SCHIST

A carved schist stone Gandharan Elephant. The elephant is carved in such a way as to have been secured into a larger carved Buddhist relief by means of a tenon type jointing mechanism. After almost 2000 years in the ground an ancient loss has resulted in the loss of his trunk, never the less a very historical piece with finely carved features. This piece would have at one time been part of a larger section of a Gandharan Schist relief from the base of a Stupa or other religious Buddhist structure.
Elephants trunk is now missing due to an ancient loss.
Measurements: Height 3.5" (9cm) x 4.25" wide (4.5cm).

SCHIST WINGED SPIRIT

A fine carved schist corbel with the head and chest of a winged spirit or devi. He wears large earrings and necklace. Fine blue/green schist of the highest quality, some soil encrustation on one side.

THE GREAT DEPARTURE

A magnificent Gandharan relief depicting Prince Siddhartha the Buddha to be, on horse back departing the town of his birth. Spirits or Yakshas support the hooves of his horse to avoid noise, while Varjrapani stands behind him recognisable by his attribute the lightning, held in his left hand. A figure stands in front of him, probably Mara or the goddess of the city trying to dissuade him from leaving Kampilavastu. Three onlookers stand in the section above. The panel is defined on the right by a corinthian column. This is a spectacular piece although heavily soil encrusted after almost two thousand years, does not detract from the beauty and iconography of this important event in the Buddhas life. 11 FIGURE LARGE GANDHARA RELIEF

A Large curving spectacular Gandharan schist relief, featuring 11 worshipping figures, most of which are carrying objects, gifts or offerings. The second figure from left is probably prince Siddhartha, who was later to become the Buddha. (one repair, clearly visible to the left on photographs does not detract from this piece). Good detailing visible after almost two thousand years, some very slight soil encrustation, a very sort after piece. Professionally mounted on a plexiglass stand. From Pakistan or Afghanistan. This relief is large enough to make an excellent feature display.
Excellent condition with good detail, one ancient break has been restored with the original piece, no attempt has been made to conceal this.

DOUBLE-SIDED RELIEF

A carved blue/green schist stone double-sided relief panel. One side features two beautifully carved lotus flowers. The reverse features three garland bearers or cupids holding two drapes of garlands below two smaller lotus flowers. Clearly visible on the top surface is two carved holes which originally would have held iron pins in order to support and hold this panel in place. This panel at one time would have formed part of a larger section of Gandharan Schist relief from the base of a Stupa or other religious Buddhist structure. Double sided relief panels such as this one are highly unusual and difficult to come by. Professionally mounted on plexiglass stand.

RARE HARITI FIGURE

A Masterpiece of Gandharan Art, Fine seated Hariti Figure consort of Pancika and protector of children. Hariti is the Yakshi personifying smallpox, an ogress, but also the protector and giver of children, often depicted carrying a cornucopia. She is wearing two large necklaces, large earrings, bracelets and anklets. Her hair is tied back, noted and hangs in a long waist length plat, seated on a pillared bench. The piece is of Museum quality, carved from blue/green schist. Excellent detail and modelling well preserved. A very fine piece. Carved in the round with fine detail and a beautiful patina 1-3rd Century AD. An outstanding piece of Gandharan Art Pakistan or Afghanistan. Loose mounted on plexiglass stand. Makes a superb and substantial addition to any Buddhist art collection.

An outstanding Museum Quality complete carved schist corbel featuring a praying devi or female deity, dressed in Grecco-Roman robes. She wears large earrings, bracelets on both wrists, necklaces and a hair ornament. This is a exceptionally beautiful and rare piece with nice patina. Probably from Taxila, end of the Parthian period. A Magnificent Large museum quality section of a Gandharan Schist relief from the base of a Stupa or other religious structure, featuring the lord Buddha. Depicting two worshipping figures and a seated Buddha. The Buddha sits in front of a nimbus with two worshippers to his left To the right is a second Buddha or Bodhisattva now incomplete with a figure to his right, the two sections are separated by a column. Carved schist. This is a quality piece of Gandharan Art, professionally mounted on a plexiglass stand. Makes a superb and substantial addition to any Buddhist art collection.
