HEAD & TORSO OF A YOUNG ATLANT
Circa 2nd - 3rd Century AD
Code: 0647 - SOLD
A Very Rare Gandharan carved Schist stone head and torso of a young Atlas carved in a Classic Hellenistic style from schist stone. The face is modelled with a serene expression in a stylised Hellenistic fashion, heavy lidded eyes, gently bow shaped lips, wide muscular jaw line. The hair is beautifully executed large curls. Muscular torso with wide shoulders, looks like he could also have been wearing a Brahman cord around his neck. The Atlant, a figure based on the Greek god Atlas, and possibly other Greek gods such as Dionysus, Apollo, etc., is seen in the context of narrative reliefs, often bearing the weight of the frieze above. Depicted as semi-divine beings often with wings which are shown squatting on some lower registers of votive reliefs. This sculpture is posed in the characteristic Atlant posture with his head cocked slightly down and to his right as if he is bearing a great weight on his shoulders, his face with a burdened expression, evoking pathos. With masculine features, thick, curly locks of hair, and a big barrel chest, he is truly befitting of the role of the Greek titan whose burden was to forever carry the heavens on his shoulders, a punishment meted out by Zeus for storming the heavens, leading the titans in revolt against the gods of Olympus.
Though most Gandharan art has some Greek flavour, this piece displays stronger Western influence than most. Somewhat atypical of the hybrid art from Gandhara. This piece is purely Hellenistic. Skillfully sculpted from a gray schist stone, this fabulous work of art is a testament to the skill of the ancient Greek influenced Gandharan artist.
Superb rare piece. Good size at 6"
Measurements not including stand: 6" (15cm).
Weight: 1kg
