MAGNIFICENT KHMER SANDSTONE RELIEF
Angkor Period 11-12th Century AD
Code: 0663 - SOLD
Extremely rare museum quality sand stone Khmer Relief depicting 'The Churning of the Ocean of Milk'. Quality piece with a beautiful surface patina. The scene would have at one time formed part of a larger Lintel situated above a doorway depicting one of the most famous scenes from Khmer mythology, that of the demons and gods churning up the sea in order to extract the elixir of immortality, coveted by both groups. The Gods depicted here holding the tail of serpent are in a tug of war, the centre of the serpent would have been coiled around Mt. Meru, at the base of this pivot would be Vishnu, incarnated as a huge turtle, his shell serving as the base for the pivot. This well proportioned section is beautifully modeled, detail is still clearly visible with no re-carving of the features. The Lintel is mounted on a museum quality metal stand and looks superb from every angle.
The patination is superb, the patina penetrates the surface of the stone, in wonderful mottled ochre hues, with a mottled variegated surface colouring, its a dry surface not altered in any way. The wear is consistent and even on the entire piece. Authentic Khmer pieces from Cambodia frequently have this mottled variegated surface colouring. The colours actually leach from both the interior of the sandstone depending upon the soil composition and minerals contained within the surrounding area in which it was buried.
The piece is in excellent condition with no cracks or repairs to the stone.
Measurements: 20" (51cm) long x 17" (43cm) high x 4" (10cm) wide
Height including quality bronze metal stand 19.5" (49.5cm).

FINE GREEN SAND STONE NAGA BUDDHA
Bayon period 13th Century
Code: 0613 - SOLD
A rare museum quality green sandstone Khmer Naga Buddha. A rare piece beautifully executed from the tougher Green stone. The Buddha sitting in the posture of Virasana meditation on three coils of Naga Muccalinda, coils are as usual smaller at the bottom and largest to the top, protected by the hooded canopy of the seven headed cobra. Both hands in dhyanamudra. His face with serene expression, ridged eyebrows, broad nose, smiling lips and elongated earlobes. The detail in the face and scales of the snake have retained a lot of there clarity due to the harder wearing nature of this green stone. The hooded rear of this example also shows the detail of the scales and the "wheel of life" always found in the centre rear of the hood. The face of the Buddha is very well defined and clearly places the piece in the Bayon period. This is truly a fine piece of Khmer art, at 48cm tall including the stand is also a large example. Photographs clearly indicate losses to both arms, certainly not unusual for a Khmer sandstone piece. There is a marks on the back of the Naga, right side clearly visible in last the photograph. There are no cracks or flaws in the stone.
Its interesting to note a shift in iconography that occurred during the reign of Jayavarman VII, who ruled as a Buddha-king rather than a Hindu God-king and thus dedicated his monuments to Buddhist rather than Hindu Divinities.
Buddha protected by the hood of Muccalinda have a long history in Buddhist art. They illustrate a moment in the life of Buddha Shakyimuni when he was shielded from a storm by the serpent. This event is believed to have happened within the first six weeks after Shakyimuni attained Buddhahood, is often represented in the visual arts throughout South East Asia.
Good condition.
Height 19" high (48cm) including stand.
Height 17" high (43cm) not including stand.

MAGNIFICENT KHMER SANDSTONE GANESH
Pre Angkor 9-10th Century AD
Code: 0571 - Price - SOLD
Extremely rare museum quality sand stone Khmer Ganesa. Quality piece with nice surface patina. Seated in Virasana on a rectangular base, both hands resting on his knee and holding reddish an a bowl, wearing a vertically pleated sampot secured by a plain belt, the reverse with a butterfly element, potbellied, trunk and tusks, large ears. The absence of a head dress and any arm or belt ornamentation indicates a pre Angkor period. The well proportioned head is beautifully modeled, detail is still clearly visible with no re-carving of incised eyes or other features
With his human body and elephant head, Ganesha remained one of the most popular Hindu gods in Cambodia from the Pre-Angkoren period until well beyond the Angkor period. In Cambodia as in India, he is worshipped as 'the Remover of Obstacles'. This Indian god of shamistic origins was later incorporated into the Hindu pantheon as the son of Shiva and Parvati (Uma). He was also revered by followers of Vishnu and was even a favourite during the reign of the Buddhist king Jayavaraman VII. In later periods, an image of Ganesh was installed in the centre of the sixteenth century fortress of Banteay Longvek, just north of Phnom Penh, and Cambodias boarder markers carried depictions of Ganesh.
The patina of the stone surface is a wonderful mottled ochre hue with areas of orange and darker black and browns. Authentic Khmer pieces from Cambodia frequently have this mottled variegated surface colouring. The colours actually leach from both the interior of this soft sandstone depending upon the soil composition and minerals contained within the surrounding area in which it was buried. It is a dry surface not altered in any way. The wear is consistent and even on the entire piece. The surface has never been re-cut or altered in any way. Originally it would have had a V-shaped element on the underside of the base as would most Khmer statues (see #0572 & 0573 below), this is usually chipped away as in the case here for ease of transportation reducing the weight of the object, also making the Ganesh sit upright of its own accord.
The piece is in excellent condition.
Measurements: 12" (35.5cm) tall. Weight: 15.5 kg approx.
