Additional information & reference material on GandharaA number of people have enquired about where to source further reliable information and recourse material on this fascinating subject, below is a short but concise list of some of the better available material; Gandhara Arts - A great online reference point, and wonderful sight put together by Muhammad Shahid. Highly informative, draws together many reference points on the one sight, in turn offering credits to numerous books on the subject. Contains an in depth look in to the history and geographical location of Gandhara and a nice 'virtual museum' page featuring a selection of relief and stucco fragments form museums and notable collections around the world. The Gandhara Style - and evolution of Buddhist Art; An in depth history of the Art of Gandhara and excellent resource book, one I refer to continually throughout this site within our descriptions written by Madeleine Hallade originally in French and later translated into English. Published by Thames and Hudson 1968. The Art of Afghanistan; by Jeannine Auboyer and published by the Hamlyn publishing group 1968. A broader history of Afghanistan from Ancient times through Gandhara to Islamic Architecture. Some interesting plates of the Begram Ivories, now in private collections, sadly most of the items in here were from the Karbul museum and are now probably destroyed. Indian Sculpture - volume 1; part of a two volume set by the renowned author and Curator of Indian and Southeast Asian Art, Los Angeles Museum of Art. Pratapaditya Pal. Covers a broad spectrum of every aspect of Indian Sculpture and Art. Los Angeles Country Museum of Art 1986 Gandharan Art in Pakistan; would have to be the most concise, and informative collection of Gandharan art ever published. A wonderful piece by piece descriptive catalogue and pictography reference book by Islay Lyons & Harald Ingholt. Published by Pantheon Books NY 1957 originally the book came in a black slipcase, unfortunately this book now attracts a very high price tag. The Art of Central Asia; by Benjamin Rowland, published by Crown Publishers NY 1974, is part of the wider series Art of the World. As its name would suggest this book encompasses the wider Art of Central Asia, the influences of Gandharan Art and subsequent impact on Central Asian Art into China via Serindia. |
