SUPERB STANDING GANDHARAN BODHISATTVA with GOLD LEAF
2nd-3rd Century AD
Code: 0650 - Price: POA
A superb schist standing Bodhisattva or divine garland bearer with nimbus, wearing a dhoti and shawl. The nimbusb behind his head indicates that he is a Bodhisattva or divine garland bearer rather than a mortal. This deeply carved figure very likely flanked an image of the Buddha. The heavy folds of his garments reflecting Hellenizing influences. Nice detail in the hair and decoration. This figure would have originally been part of a much larger relief probably along the circular base of a stupa, just below the dome or other Buddhist religious structure.
For similar examples see The Gandhara Style, Madeleine Hallade, Thames & Hudson 1968, & Indian Sculpture Volume 1, Pratapaditya Pal 1986.
NOTE: This is one of few extant schist works that exhibit remains of polychrome and gilding Scholars have long speculated that schist works may have been finished in this manner similar to what is found in stucco sculptures and prototypical works of Graeco-Roman origin. Very collectable is the large amount of the original red polychrome and gold leaf gliding that remains attached to this figure, quite unique. This is a rare opportunity to acquire such a nice piece at a very affordable price.

HARITI & PANCIKA
GANDHARA 1st-3nd Century Code: 0098 - Price: US$1,800
A Fine and interesting Museum quality green schist stone carving Pancika & Hariti, possibly from a household shrine. The tutelary pair stood high in the hierarchy at Gandhara. Harity consort of Pancika is always shown with one or more children or carrying a cornucopia as in this example here. She is the protector and giver of Children as well as the yaksha personifying smallpox!. Hariti mother of 500 sons nourished on human flesh, stole children in order to devour them. The Buddha took her last born and hid him from her, when the desperate mother approached the Buddha he replied "You have 500 sons. When you lose only one how can you be so desolate and afflicted as you pretend? In the world men have sometimes one, sometimes three or five sons, yet you kill them". Moved by these words spoken by the Buddha, Hariti became a Buddhist and was promised food from the monasteries to feed her children. Pancika, lord of the yaksha and hence the spirit and guardian of wealth, is always dressed in a tunic and leggins, like a roman soldier, or dhoti in the Indian fashion. He always carries a spear or staff as does the carving here and often holds a money bag. The two may have originally represented Iranian divinities! Evidence of the complex influences to which Gandharan art was exposed.
For similar examples see The Gandhara Style, Madeleine Hallade, Thames & Hudson 1968, & Indian Sculpture Volume 1, Pratapaditya Pal 1986. The piece has been professionally mounted on a clear plexi glass stand with black metal rod. Guaranteed original Gandhara 1st-3rd Century AD.
