A truly remarkable museum quality schist stone bust of a young Atlas or Atlant, This is a fine example of a Gandharan 1st-3rd century schist stone sculpture, from the Gandharan region of NW India and Afghanistan, a very rare find. Remains of soil encrustation throughout the surface of the piece. Although the face has sustained ancient damage to the nose, the expression of the face and moddeling of the hair is superb, with clearly defined features. The face is modelled with a serene expression in a stylised Hellenistic fashion, heavy lidded eyes, gently bow shaped lips, wide muscular jaw line. The hair is beautifully executed large curls, muscular torso with wide shoulders, Figures such as this derived from Hellenistic mythology, were they usually support elements of architecture or narrative panels. Good size at 9" tall. Superb rare piece. Guaranteed, 1st-3rd Century AD.
