Museum quality schist stone Seated Bodhisattva, probably Avalokitesvara in meditation. This is a fine example of a Gandharan 1st-3rd century Seated Bodhisattva schist stone, from the Gandharan region of NW India and Afghanistan, a very rare find in this excellent condition. Some remains of soil encrustation particularly on the lower left side. For a similar stylistic example see Christies New York, 20 Sept 2000, lot 6. He is adorned with garlands and jewellery as is usually the case and seated in a meditative posture. He has suffered one ancient break and has been repaired with the original piece.
