LARGE HINDU-SHAHI MARBLE STELE OF DURGA - Afghanistan
8th Century
Code: 0763 - Price: POA

A very rare Hindu Shahi marble figure of an eight armed image of the goddess Durga slaying the buffalo-demon Mahishasura. The theme, therefore, is usually known as Mahishasuramardini (destroyer of the buffalo demon). Her right foot supported on the back of the buffalo, her eight hands brandishing a variety of weapons. Her two formost primary arms thrust a trident into the animals neck (fragmentary). While her lion mount claws and bites the buffaloes hindquarters. Although we have listed the pieces in an India gallery due to the depiction of Durga this pieces was discovered in Afghanistan as most Hindu-Shahi.
