LARGE QUARTS CRYSTAL SHIVA LINGA
Angkorian period 12th Century
Code: 0635 - Price: POA

A fine large quartz crystal Linga. Cut from a single block of quartz and polished smooth with engraved lines on the head of the Linga and an unusual four armed engraved male figure on the base holding an attribute in each hand. Lingas such as this are principally cult objects worshipped by Lingayats, a Shaivite sect which emerged in the 12th century. All Lingayats carry there Linga on there person at all times. The use of a Linga on a family household alter would not be restricted to such sects. The popularity of Linga worship after the introduction of Hinduism to Cambodia is connected with the earlier worship of earth-gods in the form of unsculptured stones throughout Indochina. The Linga is divided into three parts which can be interpreted as showing the entire Hindu trinity incorporated within the cosmic power of Shiva. The square lower section represents Brahma the creator, the octagonal middle section represents Vishnu the preserver, while the upper cylindrical section represents Shiva the destroyer. The patina is consistant over the entire piece.

Excellent condition.
Height 5.25" high (13.5cm) x 1.6" (4.1cm) wide
Weight: 500gms
