RARE PRE ANGKOR KHMER HEAD OF VISHNU
8-9th Century - Phnom Da or Kulen Style

A rare Pre Angkor sandstone head of Vishnu the Indic deity of creation, Square heavy Khmer features, Clearly visible is the supporting arch remains on either side of the tall cylindrical mitre symbolizing the deity's exalted status is of Indian origins. The mitre comes all the way down to the nape of the neck at back, the hair curls do not protrude below, indicating that this head of Vishnu image could be more accurately attributed to the Kulen Style rather than Phnom Da. Provenance from UK collection, mounted on vintage square metal base.
